It’s hard to explain, but sentences were very chopping and just matter of fact. I think it comes from her summarizing actual historical events and trying to be brief? But two entire changes of ruling monarchs happened within two paragraphs. The author doesn’t actually demonstrate any emotional connection between characters or give examples of how events effect the larger picture.

There is zero depth to the writing and it’s just boring. Major things and changes happen to Adair but it doesn’t feel like a big deal because there is no emotional investment in any of it. The story isn’t particularly appealing or new, so having to walk through a listing of events that occurred without any real explanation or investment makes for a ponderously boring read.

I only read a third of this book before I gave up! He takes over as the King of England in one paragraph. A few pages later covering the span of several months he is killed and Adair is sad. Again, we know she is sad because the author tells us she’s sad. It’s all ridiculously matter of fact. When the King is killed, we learn her husband who she didn’t love but then decided she did love in the span of a paragraph was also killed. Again, Adair was very sad about this because the author said so.

I would say give this one a pass unless you really like this author.

There are better authors, even if you are just looking for a light read with some sizzle I hate myself for saying it that way. Julie Garwood does some good highland books around the same time period. They aren’t stellar, but they are much better and more fun that this book. Smapl person found this helpful.

When Bertrice Small comes out with a new book, I buy it without even reading what it’s about. She’s the only author whose writing I have this much faith in I’ve enjoyed her works for years. One of the most interesting elements I enjoyed about this book is the alternate view she presented of Richard III.

He is usually one of the most maligned figures in English history, yet Ms. Small portrays him as a loving, compassionate character. I love how she weaves in the historical figures into the story line, not just in this book, but all her historical romances. If you are a fan of the Tudor period, especially Elizabeth I like I am, you may want to check out her other titles, especially the O’Malley saga. And if you’re new to Ms. Small’s works and like Celtic mythology, check out my all-time favorite, “A Moment in Time”-I read the whole thing in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down!

This book proved to be no exception from the rest All of Bertrice Small’s heroines are such strong characters, and Adair is no exception.

I am new to the worlds of Bertice Small. This is the first book of hers that I have read. And I have to admit to being very disappointed. She’s written a huge collection of books, so she is obviously an experienced author, however I found her dialog to be stilted and the characters to be somewhat unsympathetic.

Starting with the fact that Adair name drops at every opportunity that she is the bastard daughter of King Edward. I loved it when she finally met Conal, and tried that line out on him, and he said paraphrasing – well, you weren’t born of King Edward’s Queen, so get over yourself.

My feeling is that either this is an old fashioned sort of romance novel, or that Ms. Small is writing more of an historical angle to the story than a romance angle. There is a lot about characters from the War of the Roses, but you’d sort of have to have a history book beside you, or go to Wikipedia, to follow along with where Adair fits into the catalog of characters and events.

Elizabeth of York, for example, I needed to go look her up. Then I had one of those moments as a reader, where you’re hitting the palm of your hand with your forehead. She’s pregnant, but gets on the same horse with her husband – so you can imagine there is not a lot of room in the saddle – to ride to her wedding day.

Small has a reputation, so I’ll try one or two more of her books before I give up. See all 68 reviews. Customers who viewed this item also viewed. The Last Heiress Friarsgate Inheritance.
