The story introduces two girls who forge a bond with each other as they are both evacuees of the destructive Blitz. The very entity that the girls are escaping from, encounters them, despite forfst attempt to flee, fhe the baytt of the Thing. Penny is tall, thin, and pale—possibly older than Primrosewho is plump with curly blond hair. Their individual responses to the forest after the initial incident also influenced their career choices. Physically, the girls are opposites of one another. Penny and Primrose are two girls who are evacuated with a group of children to a mansion in the English countryside during World War II.
