We couldn’t make sense of the stats in the fiction, couldn’t figure out how to make monsters, and couldn’t figure out how to make fighting already-made monsters interesting. Your synopses above no challenge, no progress, no chance are r;g, way off the mark as far as playing Everway goes. I think this disconnect is at the heart of why Everway has been tough for you.
Like if John had said: Neither is wholly effective by itself. What do those numbers mean in the fiction, especially for non-human characters? There are many spheres in danger, the ones you care about saving are the ones in your character’s card-stories.
Finding the Spherewalker sourcebook is much harder, though.

A 5-Fire, 5-Earth hero can typically defeat two 4-Fire, 5-Earth enemies, or handily defeat a 3-Fire, 5-Earth character in foot race, but cannot necessarily run twice as fast even though speed is governed by Fire. Any whispers on how to spice up my Walker’s Crown variant would be appreciated.

Surely there must, in this swingin’ multi-culti game, be a way for a player’s contribution to be backed up with some Drama-derived authority other than GM fiat. That’s like every game ever. Sorry, I was just being hyperbolic with Its scream echoes for what seems like half an hour as it falls! Seriously, though, you’re absolutely right. The use of cards with free interpretation as a basis for character generation is pretty cool and functional.
It is suggested that most characters do not need magic and that it is not suitable for new players. You can also have Drama resolution in which the other players say “Yes, but” as in Polaris or in more informal ways. My impression is that Everway does this thing better than almost any other game, but if a one-driver storytelling vehicle isn’t your thing, well – not every game is for everybody. It’s clutching its face and sort of half crawling around on the floor, blood everywhere.
So don’t necessarily fall for Everway’s GM-centric approach to resolution. Everway is a fantasy role-playing game  first published by Wizards of the Coast under their Alter Ego brand in the mids.
Maybe we disagree about veerway relative contributions of my height and my mass to that SIZ stat, but I feel pretty certain that no one will challenge my claim everwa how much ass my guy is hauling around the game world.
That said, the GM advice in Everway already seems to regard them as integrated, in that everything is GM fiat Drama until the GM doesn’t know what the r;g is going to happen next, at which point players start describing what they’re doing and the GM compares the relevant character stats Karma to determine what the likely outcome is, throwing a card and reading it Fortune to confirm or deny that judgment as desired.
