Few expository works have achieved as unanimous authority as A History of Philosophy series. Substantively, however, the only thing I really have to complain about is the lack of translations provided for the Greek and Latin which he uses rather liberally in the text. From where I am standing, namely an amateur philosophy student, nothing looks improvable in this volume.

I have been amazed at the exhaustive scholarship as well as the admirable fairness of the author. Greece and Rome Frederick Copleston Limited preview – Well written, extensive and informative, objective and respectful, systematic and complete. Firstly these volumes were written exclusively for ME!!!
Thus, Copleston’s first volume and, eventually, matriculation in Loyola University Chicago. He is a Jesuit, but is generally fair-minded, even if he does have a tendency to conclude chapters with a reaffirmation of the correctness of revealed religion, and it is not uncommon for him to make moralistic asides that, to an atheistic reader indate him and his work considerably. Any negative comment I can make on this work would be mere nitpick, and any praise by me would be admiration rather than critical approval. I don’t particularly like the large amount of Greek and Latin terminology and quotations. Those Greeks were always the ones who intrigued and amazed me still do!! Poo poo, I was very excited to pick this up as well. Someone also worked out how to weigh the earth!!! Copleston writes with welcome clarity, but without the slight dumbing down of Will Durant’s engaging Story of Philosophy or the biases of Bertrand Russell’s provocative History of Western Philosophy.
