He uses the melody that first appeared in his very early “Tres Apuntes” and there called “Bulgarian. I don’t know his sources and have hhika studied this myself, so I’d be interested to hear about it too!

This is a challenging piece, not necessarily because of the quick passages many of these are aided by the scordaturabut because of the difficulty of maintaining the appropriate feel throughout the various transitions. Another important thing to consider is that “Hika” is a lament in Japanese musical tradition from what I understand and so this piece in memory of Brouwer’s good friend, Toru Takemitsu, is really a sort of mournful elegy in his memory.

I will report back when I have started learning the piece. There’s nothing wrong with pleasure is there?
