Jo Beverley’s historicals always set the perfect tone for the period, with the impeccably detailed settings, the lively cant and jargon, and the mannerisms at all levels of society. The heroine is from humble upbringing, a teacher in a girl school.

This isn’t a fluffy Regency. For the pervy factor, there’s a pretty good build up of tension throughout the book, but note that there’s only one sexytimes scene, and it’s kind of halfway-opened door.

I should’ve taken a nap instead of reading this: Three stars perhaps do not give this book enough credit. As for Beth, while she started off as a champion for feminism, she was quick to forgive her husband’s violent nature. The only thing that made it sorta okay in the end was that, to me, he seemed to be beating himself up about it more than she was.
Now, over twenty years later, the duke learns he has a legitimate daughter—Beth Armitage, a child of his blood—and he compels Lucien and Beth to marry.

However, the fact that we get the same level of explicit detail which, I admit, isn’t all that much when the hero schtups his mistress as when brids does the same with his wife was a huge turn off.
