By the time the story opens, in the s, Guy is a millionaire, and Nerine is a widow. The only person I had difficulty liking was Tessa – I liked her, of course, but I didn’t love her.

I felt like David deserved Tessa more than Guy did though, and that Guy deserved someone new entirely. This was msgic Eva Ibbotson fare: The book had been in her head for years before she actually wrote it. Opening up an Eva Ibbotson book is like biting into a hot biscuit smothered with butter and jam–at once perfectly satisfying and extremely comforting.

I came to Ibbotson recently and have been completely drawn in. In escaping her inheritance with this man she finds her destiny. His character mgic also kind and extremely smart in this book. In Vienna, he meets the girl of his dreams, but is rejected out of hand because he is a poor nobody despite his brillance.
